Note:

Jim Barclay took part in this flypast, and gave a display afterwards. He remembers:

"There were 18 aircraft total, 17 of which were in the formation and F/L DM (Dave) Peters flew the spare NZ1065.

After the flypast at Wigram, and the landing of the other 16 Harvards, I joined with Don McAllister in Harvard 15 for a short co-ordinated display – Pairs Loop, breakaway over the top for Harvard 15 to do low passes while I positioned for the final display – run in at 600 feet 205K pull up to the vertical, at 2800 feet flick and hammer stall, vertical eight, derry turn, stall turn right, double barrel roll, 4 point roll, climbing aileron roll to slow loop, join up with Harvard 15 for line abreast run, split for opposed loop/ozzletwizzle, roll under break, land and pairs shutdown.

That was it – a glass of bubbly each to mark the occasion of the final in-service use of the Harvards dated 24 June 1977.  A sad occasion for us all on behalf of many, many others who had flown the Harvard in RNZAF service.

Thereafter the Harvards were stored in the Wigram hangars awaiting disposal.  On 12 July 1978 I flew 1076 (now ZK ENB) for two famil circuits at Wigram before ferrying the aircraft to Christchurch Intl Airport for the new owner (Rex Brereton, Air Traffic Controller, Ohakea).  It was quite a buzz to add full power for takeoff and hear the noise and thrill of the Harvard's big radial again, compared to the sophisticated 210Hp Lycoming of the Airtrainer CT 4B we were now using for pilot and flying instructor training at Wigram."

Notes:

Sqn Ldr Pat Neville was passenger aboard the two seat Vampire flown by Jim Jennings

Jim Barclay recalls:

"The flypast was so low going past the dais that the white diesel smoke coming from five aircraft in the formation immediately enveloped the dignitaries. Fred Myers did a ‘low flyby' as leader of the formation but had forgotten that there were two layers of Vamps below him !  Passing the small Captain Cook ship mounted on top of the clock tower in the main street of Gisborne, Ross Ewing asked “ are you still there 9 ?” suggesting that 9 may have been scrapped off in the clock tower.

Pat Neville flying as a passenger with Jim Jennings at the bottom of the formation later remarked that he could see the new pair of underpants he needed quite clearly in Hallensteins shop window as we passed by VERY low up the main street !

Iggy Wood had a blocked ear after the morning flight on 9 Oct but I don't know who took his place for the afternoon flight."

The Operation Silver Bullet Team

This No. 14 Squadron Vampire team formed specifically for a tour of New Zealand in late November 1972, to undergo farewell flypasts of the Vampire type which were being withdrawn and replaced by BAC Strikemasters in service. The team of five aircraft included three two-seat Vampire T.11's and two single-seat FB.5 Fighters.
