Norma Garland was the daughter of mr and Mrs B.N. Garland of Brookdale, Karapiro, Cambridge. She was the sister of Claire Garland.

Norma got a number of mentions in the newspapers for her social activities, such as attending trotting meetings at the Cambridge Racecourse; being a dancer at the August 1936 Cambridge Jubilee Ball which was Victorian back to Tudor-period themed; being involved with the Waikato Hunt meetings; taking part in the May 1937 Coronation Ball's historical pageant in the Cambridge Town Hall; and attending the July 1939 Cambridge Polo Ball.

Norma married Richard Capewell (Richie) Hannon of Tinopai, Hautapu, Cambridge on Saturday the 23rd of September 1939 in St Andrews Church, Cambridge. Interestingly two of Richie's four groomsmen were later-to-become Cambridge airmen Richard Sampson and Norma's cousin Murray Garland.

Connection with Cambridge: Norma grew up at Brookdale, Karapiro, Cambridge. She later lived in Tauranga.
